Life is a Woodwind Instrument

We were sitting in band one day, trudging through a particularly difficult song. Outside, it snowed. Inside, we shivered. My flute was an icicle in my hands as I muddled through sixteenth note runs.

Mrs. Blossom was conducting, and suddenly she stopped. She waved her arms. "You! Trumpet!"

The redhead looked up from, bewildered. "Yes?"

"How often should you tune?"

"Uh..." The girl was dazed, tired, cold.

"Come on now, how often should you tune?"

"Seven."

The band broke into waves of laughter. A nonsensical answer was appropriate because our musical tone is a joke. Us? In tune? With 22 flutes? Funny joke. You got us. *slaps knee*

Mrs. Blossom laughed too, but grew suddenly solemn. She stood up straight as an arrow again and pointed at the trumpet player beside the girl. "Wrong. You, Jordan. What's the right time to tune?"

"All the time!"

"Correct!" She pumped her fist. "Now everyone fix yourselves and let's try again."

Instruments were adjusted, warm air blew through mouthpieces, horns came up. Mrs. Blossom counted us off again, and something magical happened.

It sounded better.

It's difficult to explain to a non-musician how tuning works. But basically, two instruments are in tune when they play the same note together and it sounds like one instrument. They blend flawlessly. Usually it takes a lot of adjusting of the strings or mouthpiece to get this to happen.

In good bands, each section sounds like one instrument. No one sticks out. None can be picked out above the rest. A blind listener shouldn't be able to tell that there are 5 alto saxophones. They should sound like one.

For stringed and percussion instruments, you can pretty much tune after you warm up and you're good for the performance. But woodwinds and brass-- instruments that require air from your mouth?

No.

Every note is different; you have to adjust constantly. Your instrument may play one note that is beautifully in tune with your neighbor, and the next note will be horribly flat. You have to fix it. It's up to you to make those little adjustments that make a big difference.

In the past few months, I've learned that life is very similar. It's unpredictable; nothing ever happens the same way twice. One moment things will be going perfectly, the next your plans are in broken shards at your feet. You have to be ready to adjust and make those little changes so that things are smooth and even in the long run.

When you realize you're in the wrong place or making the wrong decision or going the wrong direction, you have to change something. Otherwise, nothing will get better.

The beautiful thing is that with life, it's never too late to "tune" yourself-- to adjust things or start something new.

You never know. Things might just get better.

hello july

"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."

--F. Scott Fitzgerald

So this is a June wrap-up of sorts (that's what the kids are doing these days, yes?) accompanied by random irrelevant pictures of leafy green things.

Books Read

-The Accident Season by Moira Fowley-Doyle
-The A.B.C. Murders by Agatha Christie
-Alive by Scott Sigler
 -Winter by Marissa Meyer

Happenings

-Vacation. June started out in Florida in Poppaw's two-bedroom summer home near St. Augustine. We went to Cumberland Island, the beach, Sea World, and the local swimming hole.

-Girls' State. This is an educational leadership-type camp about government that everyone told me would be a great idea. "Yeah, okay, maybe it'll push me to come out of my shell." Wrong. I mostly wanted to die the first four days and I cried profusely. It wasn't until the last two that things were bearable. I had an awesome roommate though and I got closer with the girls who came from my school. So it wasn't a total loss.

-Guinea pig. My friend's mom teaches preschool and she didn't want to keep the class pet anymore so she asked around if anyone wanted it. We now have a small cute creature named Cinderella who likes to eat loudly at two a.m.

-Paint Party. We had a paint party at church where I made a mess painted flowers.

-Instagram. I finally set up an account. The link is on my sidebar.

-Black Bears Game. My best friend took me to a baseball game in Morgantown. I still don't understand baseball but I have a new love for Kona Ice.

-Wonder Woman. I went to see this amazing movie with my dad and later with my close friend who was traumatized by the ending and would not let go of my arm. "Rebecca. Rebecca, no. Tell me he doesn't die. Nooooo this is not okay." 9/10, this was a quality film.

Goals Accomplished

-Go dairy-free. I'm technically intolerant to milk but I usually consume it anyway and deal with the consequences. I did some research and it seems like it might help my acne if I stop having dairy, so I'm giving it a shot. I did really well, except for at Girls' State, where my only consolation was a daily ice cream bar. ✔

-Start a bullet journal. ✔

-Start working out again.

-Clean out closet. I'll be trying out ThredUp this month and donating some clothes.✔

-Blog.

 Goals for July:

- stay dairy free
- use aforementioned bullet journal
- read 5 books
- take more pictures
-talk to people

I've got some more posts coming your way when I get back from visiting family. Happy July, everyone.

Commitment Issues

Hi. *sheepish wave*

If anyone who reads this blog hasn't noticed, I have problems committing to doing things regularly. Like blogging. Hehe...

But that's just one in a long list of things, and I've come to the conclusion that I have a problem. Here are five other topics that seem to indicate my commitment issues.

Writing. It starts, it stops. Just check out my Works in Progress tab for proof. I write 3/4 of a novel; I throw it away. I write a poem; I forget about it. I get up every morning at six and write for an hour; I start sleeping in. It's a vicious and destructive cycle.

Homework. Learning is all fine and dandy, my friend, but why must school follow me home? There's a separation of Church and State and I feel like that should also apply to school and home... just putting that out there.
All jokes aside, homework is very important and I try my best to do my work and maintain my position at the top of my class. I just can't seem to do it... how do I say this... in a timely manner? I finish essays I've had for weeks at two a.m. the day they're due. I have difficulty setting aside time daily to work on assignments bits at a time.

Pen pals. If any of my lovely old pen pal friends still read this blog, bless you. You put up with a lot, poor souls. Between me putting off writing your letters regularly and forgetting birthdays and even whose turn it is to write, it's amazing you've stuck around this long. I'm really a terrible person.

Career. I do everything possible to avoid the following question, including hiding, fake phone call interruptions, and feigning deafness. "What are you going to do when you finish high school?"

Source

I DON'T KNOW. (Why is that the number one question to ask teenagers? Who actually enjoys answering this question?) The reason I "accidentally" knocked over a stack of books to evade your question, Aunt Kara, is because I can't seem to commit to a career path. I can't decide on what I want to do. There's so many options and what if I pick the wrong one ahhhhhhhhhhhh

Books. I prefer a standalone novel over a book series. Why? Because if I read that first book, I feel like I have to read all the others and that's just too much obligation. I started Cinder freshman year and I'm just now finishing Winter as soon-to-be-senior because I couldn't make up my mind about continuing the series.

So, indecisiveness, commitment issues, a preference for naps over facing the things that need to get done... call it what you will. But I promise I will do my best this summer to blog and interact with you peeps on a regular basis. I'm back to stay... again.
